Apple Crumble

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: An oven, a large mixing bowl, an oven-proof dish, 4 large cooking apples, 225g plain flour, 120g unsalted butter, 120g sugar (granulated or brown works best), a dash of cinnamon

STEPS:
1. Preheat an oven to gas mark 5. 2. Using a dry bowl, mix the butter and flour with a fork to a breadcrumb-like texture and add the sugar. 3. After mixing well, peel the apples (don’t do this too far in advance as they will brown), quarter them and cut the quarters into roughly 6 slices each. 4. Carefully, put the apples into an oven-proof dish, sprinkling on top a touch more sugar and cinnamon and, evenly spread the crumble mixture over the apples. 5. Now, place the dish on the middle shelf of the oven and leave it to cook for 40 minutes. After cooling for around 15 minutes, add cream or ice-cream and devour!

DID YOU KNOW?
Crumbles were introduced in Britain during the Second World War as a result of rationing. They required far less scarce ingredients than were necessary for making pastry
